GUINNESS ANNOUNCES 5% REVENUE RISE

GUINNESS ANNOUNCES 5% REVENUE RISE

Guinness Nigeria has announced its interim results for the six months which ended December 31, 2014.

The company delivered a five percent increase in revenue, while gross profit was up by two percent.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr John O’Keeffee, said: “We experienced improvement in performance during the half as revenue for the second quarter showed a growth of 13 percent compared to minus six percent in the first quarter. The negative gearing due to mix drove a net sales growth of five percent”.

The results, which were released to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, also disclosed a marked increase in one off costs and administrative and marketing expenses.

Finance and Strategy Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc Mr. Ron Plumridge, said: “Some of the key cost drivers over the period are the significant investments made to support our route to consumer optimization and will support future growth.

“These strategic investments, which have been classified as one off costs in the income statement, have depressed operating profit for the half. In the second half, we plan to sustain volume growth but recognise there are significant external uncertainties we will need to continue to manage

Chairman, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr. Babatunde Savage said: “The Board is confident that we are making the right investments in the company to ensure our long term competitiveness, and continues to support the management in its efforts to build a business that can win the market”.

At the official launch attended by Friends and Partners of DITC as well as members of the Press, Board member, Dawn in the Creeks, Andre Blaze Henshaw said the second season would leverage on the awareness and excitement generated by its debut season and highlight the gains made so far and the challenges facing the project. “In our first season, we mobilized the youth of the area to become change agents in a Niger Delta that was, for too long, perceived as a cauldron of degradation, restiveness and mayhem”, Henshaw reminded.

And while these issues have not been totally eradicated, we can literally see a dawn of peace and hope on the horizon”.

Season two follows the 21 young men and women who had enrolled in the Nollywood Academy as they juggle their studies with their roles as peace ambassadors to their communities as well as leaders among their peers.

“Now things really get interesting because our fledgling film makers are starting to realize that the path of peace comes with its own peculiar issues”, — Henshaw explained.

Among the friends and partners present at the launch was, the US Consular General in Nigeria, Ambassador Jerry Hawkins, who was full of praise for the Initiative and pledged the continued support of the American Government. “The U.S. Mission partnered with a distinguished group of Nigerian leaders to give the people of the Niger Delta platforms like the Dawn in the Creeks reality TV show and weekly radio programs, to share non-violent solutions to problems with their fellow Nigerians as well as with local, state, and national authorities”, he said.

Jerry hinted that “Improving the relationship and accountability between the government and its citizens will go a long way to ensuring the future remains promising for the region. Today, Dawn in the Creeks is a social enterprise run by a competent board of advisors from the world of business, civil society and entertainment.  We are looking for corporate partners who share our vision of a better future for our youth.”

In July 2011, a global plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children and keeping their mothers alive was launched at the United Nations general assembly high level meeting on AIDS in July 2011. On its part, in November 2014, Nigeria unveiled the National Operational Plan for the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV 2015-2016 to jump-start the implementation of similar efforts in the country.

It is against this backdrop that UNAIDS is partnering with Etisalat Nigeria to support the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), other government departments and the Civil Society to boost Nigeria’s efforts to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

Vice President, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, Etisalat Nigeria, Ibrahim Dikko said,We are happy to partner with UNAIDS and NACA for this unique cause. We recognize that a nation can only be economically buoyant if it has a healthy population. This we are committed to building, by attacking its most deadly threats, one of which is HIV/AIDS. We are joining hands with these strategic and effective organisations, and together we will drive the promotion of life and health, for Nigerians in general, persons living with HIV, children yet unborn.

“This initiative is bound to avail more avenues of stopping new HIV infections in Nigeria. We welcome this new impetus Etisalat is bringing to the HIV response in Nigeria.” said Prof. John Idoko, Director General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS

Dr. Bilali Camara, UNAIDS Country Director for Nigeria and the UNAIDS focal point for the ECOWAS concluded that,  “Ending the HIV epidemic among children in Nigeria by 2020 will result in preventing 240,000 new HIV infections among children and an additional 460,000 new HIV infections among adults. In all, we are looking at preventing 340,000 AIDS-related deaths and a net benefit of 30 billion United States dollars, with 12 million life-years gained.”

In 2013, Nigeria represented 30 per cent of the burden of mother-to-child transmission of HIV globally, although new scientific evidence indicates the target to have zero new HIV infections among children is achievable.

About Diabetes:
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to make insulin, or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas, that acts like a key to let glucose from the food we eat pass from the blood stream into the cells in the body to produce energy. All carbohydrate foods are broken down into glucose in the blood. Insulin helps glucose get into the cells. Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90% of diabetes.
It may remain undetected for many years and the diagnosis is often made when a complication appears or a routine blood or urine glucose test is done. It is often, but not always, associated with overweight or obesity, which itself can cause insulin resistance and lead to high blood glucose levels. People with type 2 diabetes can often initially manage their condition through exercise and diet. However, over time most people will require oral drugs and or insulin.

 About Sanofi:
